Call for Nominations
The Southern Economic Association seeks to honor exemplary educators for their contributions to economics instruction. The contribution can be on a single campus or to the profession more broadly. The SEA is especially interested in identifying extraordinary talent in conveying economic concepts and in rewarding outstanding efforts that enhance teaching effectiveness such as:
- Innovative methods of instruction;
- Unusual courses that explore the boundaries of economics;
- Interdisciplinary instruction that links economics with other disciplines; and
- Research on how to effectively teach or evaluate economic learning.
The Southern Economic Association® will award the recipient of the 2020 Kenneth G. Elzinga Distinguished Teaching Award the following: an inscribed plaque, a cash prize of $500, complimentary registration to the Association’s 90th Annual Meeting in New Orleans, LA (November 21-23, 2020), and up to three nights complimentary lodging at the New Orleans Marriott. The Award presentation will take place during the 2020 SEA Presidential Luncheon on Sunday, November 22, 2020. The winner will also be acknowledged in the Southern Economic Journal®.
All nominations must be approved and endorsed by the chair of the nominee’s economics department, and only one nomination may be submitted by a department in a year. Nominations should come in the form of a letter that establishes why the faculty member deserves the award. Specific examples that illuminate why the award is warranted should be included in the letter, but supporting materials such as teaching evaluations are discouraged. Please include contact information for both the nominator and the nominee, as well as the nominee’s current vitae.
Nominees, who were not selected in previous years, will be placed in the pool for this year’s award. However, we encourage interested nominators to update their letters of nomination. Chairs from departments with unselected nominees from previous years should feel free to endorse both previous nominations, as well as a new nominee this year.
For full consideration by the Committee, nominations must be received by Sunday, May 31, 2020. Submit nomination letters and supporting documents as an e-mail attachment to email@example.com. The letter may be addressed to:
